The Origin of Pilates

Although now Pilates is popular with professional athletes as one of their trainings, it was initially an exercise created for physical rehabilitation.

Roughly a hundred years ago, a German named Joseph Haveltas Pilates created Pilates that we know today.

This kind of exercise, who was quite ill during his childhood, was influenced by his father, who was an athlete and worked on all kinds of training. As a result of his hard training, he had overcome his illness by the time he was 14 years old and became a model for anatomical books. Later, when he was taken prisoner in England, he devised a rejuvenation exercise with equipment that could be used by fellow soldiers while lying down. This is the origin of Pilates.

After that, he traveled to the United States and opened a studio in New York where many ballet dancers and athletes visited Pilates to recover from their injuries and illnesses. It is said that this became the talk of the city and spread to the general public. It is evident that the Pilates’ method that was conducted through his research based on his experience had a strong meaning of exercising to relieve physical disorders.
